Sketchbook Assignment

Week 8

Don't forget The Rules! For more information on what will be accepted in your sketchbook, click here.
Drawing 1, A Texture or Object          For 10 minutes, draw a silver spoon.. Hah! I bet you thought it would be more cloth drawings! Those will come later...but now we're going to work on shine, or how light reflects off a surface to show matte or shine. Later you can use these techniques to show whether your cloth (or anything else, for that matter) is smooth and shiny, like satin, or rough, like wool. Some hints...
  • Lightly draw the outline of your spoon. Then lightly draw the outline of the major color/value changes.
  • Don't move your head or your spoon, or all of the dark and light places will change and it will drive you crazy.
  • If you're having trouble seeing the edges of the tones, squeeze one eye shut. This will flatten the image and make it easier for you to analyze it.
  • The shinier and harder the object, the sharper the edges of the values changes, especially the darkest tones and the specular highlights (shiny bits).
  • Speaking of specular highlights, don't lose them! Don't shade over them or smudge.
  • You'll have at least three tones, bright white, medium grey and your darkest tone.

             Drawing 2, A Living Thing

For 10 minutes, draw a bare foot from the front. I bet all of your feet have been profile drawings from the side. Of course they were. But sometimes people walk straight towards you. Some hints...

  • Remember, the big toe is bigger and points in the direction of travel. It also lines up to the inside of the body, not the outside.

Drawing 3, Free Draw          For 10 minutes, draw a character of your choice.
