Sketchbook Assignment

Week 5

Don't forget The Rules! For more information on what will be accepted in your sketchbook, click here.
Drawing 1, A Texture or Object          For 10 minutes, draw 3 different types of flags blowing in the wind. The flag drawings are slightly different ways to show cloth, this time reacting to wind. You can use the same techniques you use on the edges of flags to draw the hems of skirts and capes as they move, as well as curtains blowing in the wind. Some hints...
  • Everything blows into the same direction. Don't have one flag blowing off in a hurricane to the right, and another billowing to the left.
  • Be consistent with your light source. If your light is coming from the right, then the shadows will be on the left.
  • Remember that words, lines, etc. inside the flag will be in perspective, too.
  • Types of flags are square flags, long triangular pennants, and swallowtail flags.

             Drawing 2, A Living Thing

For 10 minutes, draw one quick pose of a person running. Draw a quick running figure; but this time go into more detail. Your challenge is to get the proportion of the figure right and to position the arms and legs correctly. Some hints...

  • Watch your centre of balance. The more you keep the imaginary vertical line going from the ear to the planted foot, the more stable and still the figure is. The more the line leans at an angle, the faster the figure will look like it's running.
  • Using your practice with drawing cloth, see if you can get a hint of motion in the clothing.

Drawing 3, Free Draw          For 10 minutes, draw a character of your choice.
