Drawing 1, A Texture or Object

For 10 minutes, draw a sandy desert or beach.. Again, you're looking at the shading, but now you don't have reflections! The surface has the same structure as a rough sea, but the surface is matte. Add a few lizards or Jedi Knights for scale, and now you have a whole new environment in your repertoire. Some hints...

  • The physics of sand is almost exactly like water, only instead of water drops you have sand grains. Sand flows, ripples under the wind, and even swirls. Dunes are just big waves.
  • Keep your edges a bit harder when you draw sand and the interior shading as smooth and subtle as you can make it.

             Drawing 2, A Living Thing

For 10 minutes, sketch a 7-head and an 10-head wireframe figure We're going to start to learn some proportions of figures. The normal human is about 6 to 7 heads high. This makes for a rather squat figure, but sorry...that's reality. More heroic or cartoon figures are 8 heads high. When you get to anime or fashion drawing, you're up to 12-14 heads high. These figures have very long, long, long legs and tiny pin heads. Some hints...

  • The middle of a normal person isn't the waist, but the crotch or hip joint.
  • Beginner artists always draw the arms too short. Always. The elbow is even with your waist or belly button and the fingertips end at mid-thigh.
  • When you start a figure drawing, make sure the head is at the top of the page. People start the head too low because the natural tendency is to plop your hand down in the middle of the page. Then they run out of room at the bottom and force the figure's feet to the very bottom of the page, which shorts the figure into a little troll and looks dumb. Plan for space for your entire figure by very lightly drawing a basic wireframe every time you draw a figure.
